When it comes to moving your career forward, networking is essential. While we all have a personal and professional network to maintain and cultivate, it’s important to also leverage “Instant Networking,” aka, digital networking.

Key to any job search can often be finding the decision maker at an organization, and contacting them to express your interest. LinkedIn is central to this strategy, affording you an extra, direct, and effective way to promote your candidacy on a person-to-person basis.

Reaching the right person, in a respectful, tactful, and timely manner, can make the difference between being interviewed and being ignored. If you are looking for a job, you may consider investing in a LinkedIn Premium membership, which provide you the ability to search for, identify, and contact the likely hiring manager for that job you’ve spotted on Indeed.com.

If the job poster offers InMail, you can use your premium account to communicate directly with the job poster; if not, you can use LinkedIn to research the person and use Chat GPT (or other AI engines) to figure out the email format for your contact.

Don’t forget – you can reach out to people, even if it’s not job-specific. You can facilitate an opening and potentially build professional relationships with subject matter experts to gain insight into a field or company through an informational interview or other exploratory conversation.

Regardless of who you are contacting or why, take the time to craft the perfect elevator pitch. It should be succinct (no longer than the visible text box), professional, and gracious. Punch your strengths and the value you will bring to the role. And, proofread three times before you hit the send button!
